I put my makeup on around 6AM then head to work about an hour later.

This may be because I have oily skin (not sure), but this foundation moved around SO much. If you layer the foundation on, it’s worse. I said in the cons that it has medium coverage, and it does, but even one small layer of this foundation lasts maybe about 2 hours, 4 hours if you’re having a good day. I don’t think the doe foot applicator is the most sanitary option, which is why I count this as a con. I mean, yes, hardcore first world problem, but every time I used this foundation, I would open it, and swipe the foundation on one of my fingers (clean hands), and would swipe that onto my face. I found this applicator cumbersome to work with. 18! Drugstore foundations have more of a color range than that, right? 2. They only have a selection of 18 shades per line (see above). The Color RangeĪfter Rihanna’s successful launch of her Fenty Beauty makeup line, including a range of foundation colors for everyone under the sun, Tarte’s range failed to please. You can build it up, sure, but there’s a reason why you shouldn’t (see cons). Because it’s more liquidy, it tends to lean on the err of medium coverage. This is NOT at all a full-coverage foundation.

So, of course, having a semi-oil slick for a face, I opted for the matte foundation. Dry skin individuals may opt for the Hydrating Foundation and those with oily skin (hi!) will probably want to try the matte foundation. Of the 36 shades (we’ll get into that below), 18 are made for those who have dry skin and 18 for those who have oily skin. I purchased my foundation at Ulta for $42 including tax. Note: I tried this foundation everyday for 10-15 hours per day for 2 weeks straight, just like I did for my Kat Von D Foundation review. If you’re thinking about handing over more than $40 to your Ulta salesperson, please read this review first. Spoiler alert: it ain’t good.

While I have yet to try the Shape Tape concealer (because I don’t need a concealer yet), I decided to give their Shape Tape foundation a try. It seems Tarte decided to ride the coattails of their concealer’s popularity and bring their beloved Shape Tape lovers with a foundation by the same name. We especially recommend it if you are after skin brightening as this seems to be the strongest point of MAP.The Tarte Shape Tape concealer apparently turned the makeup world on it’s head. We have better news about the other two things: in-vitro data shows that MAP can boost collagen synthesis similar to AA (though in the case of AA it's proven in-vivo) and even better, MAP is proven to work as a skin brightener in-vivo (on real people).īottom line: when it comes to vitamin C derivatives, MAP is definitely an option. Regarding the three magic abilities of pure vitamin C (antioxidant, collagen booster, skin brightener), there is no published data about MAP's antioxidant or photoprotection capabilities. Even if it does, we don't know how good the conversion rate is (but to be fair the same is true for all other derivatives). The good news is that in-vitro data shows that MAP does convert, but the bad news is we do not really know if the same is true on real, living human skin. Moreover, derivatives not only have to be absorbed into the skin, they also have to be converted into pure AA. What is not so good is that, as the great review study about vitamin C derivatives in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology writes, MAP is "at very best, poorly absorbed in comparison to AA." MAP does solve the stability problem: it's stable up to pH 7, so far so good.
